The PBMA’s H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, also offers the following short term and long term fellowship courses,  to upgrade the skills of practicing ophthalmologists. So far, we have trained more than 907 ophthalmologists nominated by the Government of India and private ophthalmologists from all over the country as well as from abroad, under skill transfer program of the hospital.

Research fellowship is available in all sub speciality, duration 6 months in addition to the regular duration. The CBM-H. V. Desai eye hospital Phaco training centre with provisions and resources from Zeiss aims at training the budding surgeons in a well-equipped OT set up for phaco surgeries and a highly sophisticated Wet lab facilities. The training schedule has been designed keeping in mind quality, safety and meticulous performance of each step both in Wet lab as well as real time surgery. By the end of training program the trainee will have thorough knowledge about IOL calculations/A-scan, Safe OT practices, Phacoemulsification surgeries, Phaco machine and Post-op evaluation and management.

Wet Lab Training


H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, is a project of The Poona Blind Men’s Association, which is a comprehensive eye care institute, with facility for quality eye care service and skill transfer. So far, the Institute has trained 305 trainees in phacoemulsification. The CBM-H. V. Desai Eye Hospital Phaco Training Center, supported by Zeiss Ltd., with resources and provisions, aimed at training the budding surgeons, in a well-equipped Operation Theatre, which was set up for Phaco surgeries along with a highly sophisticated Wet lab facility, to enhance the learning experience


  • To orient the trainee in Phaco microsurgery by the wet lab training.
  • To enhance the trainee’s theoretical knowledge by observation as well as phaco online lectures.
  • Orient the trainee in different IOL calculating modalities.

Duration of Course: 3 Days

Education Qualification:

  • A Resident post M.B.B.S enrolled in an institute for post-graduation.
  • Ophthalmology PG degree M.S/DOMS, DNB, MD.

Course Fees: Rs. 10,000 + 18% GST

Sharing Accommodation Charges: Rs. 5000 per month

Food expenses are not include and can be paid at the canteen on a monthly basis.

Highlights of the Course:

  • Access to Cyber sight phacoemulsification, online course, to enhance theoretical knowledge, assisted, with the help of, a plethora of online surgical videos, of simple as well as complicated cases.
  • Well-equipped state –of –the -art wet lab facility with training on “KITARO” artificial eye balls.
  • For wet lab training, which is one of our main highlights, we have a Zeiss Lumera 300 microscope, with side viewing attachment for the trainee observation and teaching purpose. Also internal recording system, is in place, for the trainees to record their cases, and then audit it with the trainer and the Zeiss Visalis 100 Phaco machine, used exclusively for Wet lab training purpose.
  • One to one trainee to trainer interaction.
  • Observing senior surgeons performing surgeries through T.V. display and side microscope.
  • Training in A-scan biometry.

Training Programme in Glaucoma

Eye Bank Conference

PBMA’s H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune in partnership with Orbis is offering training programme in glaucoma. The programme will be Long Term Fellowships for 6 and 12 months duration and Short Term Observership for 1 & 3 months and one-week period.

The training programme is under the Orbis – Santen project. It aims to strengthen infrastructure and build the training capacity of eye health professionals in glaucoma. Supported by Santen Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., the program will develop training infrastructure by establishing digital training hubs and equip glaucoma specialists through blended learning sandwich fellowships, observership, hospital-based training, webinars, and Continuous Medical Education (CME).

Minimum qualification is M.S, DNB, DOMS in Ophthalmology
