Oculoplasty and Ocular Oncology
At PBMA’s H V Desai Eye Hospital, are proud to announce that we have started our department of ophthalmic plastic surgery, orbit and ocular oncology as a full-time facility at our institution. This specialty deals with various diseases and tumors involving the eyelids and structures around the eyes. A vast number of structural as well as functional anomalies can be found in structures that surround our eyeballs. They can be found present since birth (congenital) or acquired later in life.
Most of the disorders are treatable if diagnosed and managed early in their course. It is therefore most essential to get yourself evaluated for possible problems of structures around the eyes. Some of the most common problems and their treatment are described below. Our department Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Orbit and Ocular Oncology at H.V. Desai Eye Hospital try to achieve best results by early and prompt intervention.
Diseases of eyelid:
Eyelid is the protective covering over our eyeballs. We have 2 sets of eyelids covering each eyeball namely, upper and lower eyelid. In children problems such as structural defects as well as eyelid malposition e.g. drooping of eyelids (ptosis), inward of eyelid margin (entropion), outwards turning of eyelid margin (ectropion) could be found since birth. Injuries compromising the integrity of eyelid structure can occur in both children as well as adults due to trauma. Swellings, lumps and bumps (eyelid tumors- benign and malignant), eyelid malposition, drooping of eyelids (ptosis), interning of eyelid margin (entropion), outwards turning of eyelid margin (ectropion) abnormalities of eyelashes (trichiasis, districhiasis) are common in adults.
We perform eyelid reconstruction, ptosis correction, correction of eyelid malposition, eyelid tear repair are some of the common procedures done to take care of eyelid problems.
Diseases of orbit:
Orbit is a pyramidal structure which houses eyeball and its surrounding structures and is lined by bony margin. Various infections (orbital cellulitis), inflammations (orbital inflammatory disease) and tumors (benign and malignant) can affect orbit leading to symptoms like protrusion of eyeball, decrease in vision, double vision, pain and discomfort etc. A detailed evaluation, investigations and appropriate treatment with medication and/or surgery is performed at our institute to take care of there disorders. The bony wall of orbital cavity can get fractured due to trauma; fracture repair with barrier implants is needed for correction.
Tumors in and around the eye:
Ocular oncology as a branch deals with various tumors that arise on the eyelid, orbit, surface of eyeball as well as in intraocular structures. A timely intervention is needed to save the life, eye and vision of a patient diagnosed with tumor in the eye.
Diseases of lacrimal apparatus:
Lacrimal apparatus consists of structures which help in draining of our tears into the nose. The common cause of persistent watering is a block in the draining apparatus for tears (nasolacrimal duct obstruction). When diagnosed in children, a relatively minor operative procedure (probing and syringing) can be performed to overcome the obstruction. Resistant cases in children and adults need a surgical bypass procedure (dacryocystorhinostomy) to correct the problem. These are one few of the most common procedures routinely being performed in our department of ophthalmic plastic surgery.
Facial aesthetics:
As we are all aware, eyes are the most noticeable part of our face. The aesthetic value of face significantly depends upon the size, shape and contour of the eyelids as well as the shape and integrity of eyeball. In facial aesthetic clinic, we take care of unwanted wrinkles, excess eyelid skin, baggy eyelids, uncontrolled involuntary spasms.
Artificial Eye Clinic:
Unfortunate incidents such as trauma or tumors can sometimes mandate removal of the eyeball. Such patients are thoroughly counseled regarding the procedure and are also fitted with custom made ocular prosthesis or artificial eyes which are created to match patients other eye to achieve maximum cosmosis and help with patient’s self-confidence and awareness.
