College of Optometry at H.V.Desai Eye Hospital was first established in 2005, as a university affiliated college in Maharashtra, exclusively for graduate program in Optometry. Initially it was affiliated to Yashwantrao Chawan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) and since 2016 the optometry courses have been accredited by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS, Nasik).

As per 2020 estimates by International Association for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), in India, 270 million (2.7 Cr) people have vision loss, and of these 9.2 million (92 lakh) people were blind. With a large population ageing in the next few decades, this number will increase many fold. This will create a burden on economy and a big impact on living standards for everyone. As per the World Health Organisation’s 2023 global report on avoidable blindness, uncorrected refractive errors is the #1 primary cause for visual loss, followed by Cataract and Glaucoma.

As part of it’s intervention to reduce this burden in India, PBMA’s H.V.Desai Eye Hospital management wants to increase the number of institutionally qualified, clinically skilled man power of all members of the Eye Care service delivery team – including Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Ophthalmic Assistants, Opticians, Nursing and Operation Theatre staff, Community health workers and Eye Care Managers among others.

Why study Optometry at H.V.Desai Eye Hospital, Pune ?

As per World Council of Optometry (WCO), Optometrists are primary healthcare professionals are institutionally qualified and clinically skilled to provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction, dispensing, detection / diagnosis and management of disorders of the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.

The Institute has a good team of 28 highly educated, skilled Ophthalmologists, Medical Officers, Nurses, OT technicians, Optometrists working in all the OPD & specialty eye departments. On an average, more than 500 patients and 1000 consultations are seen in OPD / IPD during the day. The hospital has 14 well equipped Operation Theatres where about 200 eye operations are performed every day.

The hospital has established 35 Vision Centres around Pune. A team of Ophthalmic assistants, community health workers also conduct door to door eye screening, identify patients who need Spectacles, Medical and even Surgical treatment. Basic eye examination along with Spectacles and medical treatment (Tele-Ophthalmology) is given by the Vision Centre staff.

With the team of qualified and clinically trained Ophthalmology and Optometry faculty members and hospital infrastructure, Optometry students get excellent learning opportunities along with hands-on clinical experience.

Highlights of the Program

Rules & Regulations

All students admitted to any course at PBMA’s H V Desai Eye Hospital will be governed by the rules and regulations that are prescribed from time to time.

College Timings:

The working hours of college are from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. However, during the final year as the students are posted for internship in different speciality clinics and outpatient procedures, the timing will depend on the host clinical schedule. Punctuality and attendance will be considered for evaluations.

Identity card :

Each student will be given an identity card, which the students are supposed to wear at all times, while in the campus. Students will not be allowed to enter the college and clinic without their identity card.

Dress code :

The college has its own dress code which is a must for all students. Whenever they attend the college and clinic. Since the students, are expected to work , in a professional clinical setting, formal dress code is mandatory.

Attendance, Conduct and Behaviour towards Peers :

The students will not be allowed to appear for the examination unless he/she has attended 80% of the lectures, demonstrations & practicals.

Applying for leave :

Students are advised to give prior information to the college authorities about their leave/ permission, failing which strict disciplinary action will be taken against them. Medical certificate should to be given, acquired from a Registered Medical Practitioner, in the case where leave is taken for more than two days duration.

Holidays :

Allotted holidays will be specified in the institution’s calendar. The Principal/Director holds the final authority to declare holiday on any other circumstances. The students are requested to contact the office for further information.

Anti-Ragging and Conduct :

The institute has formulated a strict anti-ragging guideline, wherein all students, who have taken admission in the Institute, are required to sign an undertaking to abide by these guidelines.
Students, found violating these guidelines are liable to strict disciplinary action, which includes expulsion from the institute and a criminal case will subsequently be lodged against the student, at the police station, as per the directive from the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.
The Management has the jurisdiction, to change or modify the rules and regulations, as and when deemed necessary, in order to maintain decorum in the eye hospital premises. The management, reserves the right, to take strict disciplinary action, against the students for their misconduct and subordination.
